The Facebook group “Black Smoke Matters” initiated an industry-wide shutdown to bring attention to problems truckers are facing. While the group still hopes for greater participation among its own group members in this shutdown, around 60 trucks participated. The list of demands includes hours of service reforms and training and safety standards. Furthermore, the group protests low freight rates and the high cost of equipment and repairs.
Another trucking group attempts to advocate with members of Congress about certain bills including the exemption of small carriers to install a required electronic logging device (ELD).
While both groups are independent from each other and take different path to achieve their goals, both have the need to educate the public about issues the industry is facing.
