The new bill approved by California’s Senate intends to protect independent workers for “gig” economies like Uber or Lyft. The bill prevents workers from being denied healthcare benefits or certain wages.
However, the bill also makes it impossible for two trucking companies to contract together. Independent truck drivers fear it will force them to shut down or move to another state.
Since there is no carve-out in the amendment, hundreds of independent owner-operators who built their business around that model could go out of business.
